Hyundai Steel’s Quadruped Robot Recognized by the World Steel Association With Top Award

Hyundai Steel is earning high marks from the global steel industry for its continued investment in safety.

The company was recently recognized with the top award from the World Steel Association’s Safety and Health Excellence Recognition Program for assigning high-risk tasks to its quadruped robot called “Spot.”

With the award, Hyundai Steel received high praise for using smart safety devices powered by AI technology for dangerous tasks. Such devices minimize damage in the event an accident occurs and keeps workers safe from harm.

Hyundai Steel is conducting onsite tests of its four-legged quadrupedal robot, Spot, for opening and closing oxygen gas valves and daily inspections in hazardous facilities. It is expected that the robot will be suitable to use in emergencies to prevent secondary disasters such as fire and explosions and to improve worker safety.

In addition, the company is planning to install gas sensors and cameras with Internet of Things (IoT) and AI technologies, to improve the usage of the quadrupedal robot on site.

With these technologies, the quadruped robot can conduct daily inspections of hazardous gas zones, and can detect dangerous situations in advance, such as chemical leaks. It can also be used as a substitute to inspect closed areas with a gas or asphyxiation hazard, and to inspect personal safety equipment in order to create a safe working environment.

One of the robot’s many merits is its ability to capture thermal images, as well as 30x zoom, 360° and 170° panorama video captures, to precisely identify the situation inside hazardous areas.

“We recognize safety as our foremost task and are introducing various technologies in our facilities. We will strive to do even more to create a safer workplace,” said a Hyundai Steel spokesperson.

Three activities were nominated for the World Steel Association’s Steelie Awards in the “Excellence in Communications Programmes” and “Innovation of the Year” categories. The nominations include the KidZania program that began as a part of an ESG activity at the World Steel Association’s general meeting, with the purpose of informing both internal and external stakeholders of the sustainability of both steel and Hyundai Steel. The company’s development of a 1.5 GPa hot stamping steel with a high level of firmness and the development of materials for an electric vehicle reducer were also recognized.
