The Excellent Safety Management Research Laboratory Certification was established by the Ministry of Science and ICT to reinforce the autonomous safety management capabilities of Korean research laboratories in the field of science and technology. The certification is also intended to discover and promote standard safety management models. The system grants certification to laboratories that demonstrate outstanding safety management in various levels and activities. In December 2023, three facilities were selected as Excellent Safety Management Research Laboratory certified sites. Among them, the Advanced R&D Sample Preparation Lab. was newly certified, while two other facilities – the Welding Experiment Lab. and the Resourceization Pilot Lab. – were recertified.

On February 8, the R&D Division held a plaque unveiling ceremony for the Excellent Safety Management Research Laboratory Certification. R&D Division Director Lee Bo-ryong personally visited the facilities and hung the plaques together with the laboratory staff. Since 2020, the R&D Division has acquired certifications for six of its laboratories. To obtain a certification, a laboratory must not have come across any accidents in the past two years and must score at least 80 points in 29 categories across three sectors: system, environmental safety activities, and safety consciousness. In addition, the valid period for a certification is two years, with certified laboratories required to gain recertification within 60 days before the expiration date.

Currently, the R&D Division is pursuing additional certifications for two laboratories in 2024. To achieve this, the division plans to engage in a number of activities aimed at enhancing facility resilience, such as composing safety and environmental manuals for each laboratory and providing training. Improvements to facilities are also being planned to meet certification requirements.
