Hyundai Steel has continuously sought to create a clean environment and has recently installed the Sinter Gas Treatment System (SGTS), a new air pollution reduction device, at Dangjin Integrated Steelworks.
After the successful operation of the SGTS 1 and 2, the company has completed the construction of the SGTS 3, the latest of Hyundai Steel’s SGTSs. The three SGTSs are being operated to improve overall air quality. Dangjin Integrated Steelworks completed the construction of the SGTS 1-a device developed to radically reduce fine dust particles in the air-on May 29, 2019 and began operation of the SGTS 2 on June 13 in the same year. As a result of the implementation of these systems, the average daily emissions of SOx and NOx, which are major components of fine dust, have been reduced by 100 ppm.
The SGTS 3, the last of the SGTS, went into normal operation on June 15, 2020, resulting in a noticeable reduction of air pollution. Thanks to the system, air quality in and around the factory is expected to continue to improve, and the factory’s annual air pollutant emissions are expected to significantly decrease by more than half, from 23,292 tons in 2018 to 10,000 tons in 2021. The Korean government has continued to strengthen its fine dust policies and Korean society has shown a growing interest in the environment. In keeping with these positive changes, Hyundai Steel has sought to significantly reduce the amount of air pollutants emitted from Dangjin Steelworks. In particular, Hyundai Steel has sought to develop and implement SGTSs, which are air pollution reduction facilities, to address the environmental pollution caused by Sox and NOx, which are found in the sinter gas generated by sinter factories.
Drastic Reduction of Air Pollutant Emissions
Following the completed construction and implementation of the SGTS 3, the air quality around Dangjin Integrated Steelworks has significantly improved. “After the environmental facilities installed at the sinter factories went into operation, I could no longer see smoke rising from the smokestacks, but instead saw clear skies,” said an employee of Dangjin Steelworks who participated in an on-site inspection. “I don’t see any gas or fine dust, and I feel like I am more aware of the importance of the environment than I was before.”
Along with the operation of the SGTS 3, Hyundai Steel is also planning to make additional efforts to install new sinter gas treatment systems and reduce fine dust. Reducing the company’s air pollutant emissions will have numerous positive effects including enhancing the company’s image and helping improve the local environment. All of these efforts further underscore Hyundai Steel’s intention to establish itself as a global, eco-friendly company.
