Hyundai Steel announced that it will be introducing the “Automatic Evaluation System of Life Cycle Assessment (LAC)” in September of this year.
The system is being applied to Hyundai Steel’s steel products so that the company can acquire the Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) certification from Underwriters Laboratories (UL) of the United States.
The EPD is a system that uses a quantified method to determine the expected environmental impact of the processes used for the raw material extraction, production, transportation, distribution, use, and disposal of various products. In November 2019, Hyundai Steel obtained EPD certification for 16 rolled steel and rebar products from Korea’s Ministry of Environment and UL, marking the first time such certification was obtained in the electric furnace sector. This year, Hyundai Steel is preparing to additionally obtain EPD certification in the blast furnace sector for its hot-rolled steel (HR), a coating agent for cold-rolled steel, and a rear plate. The establishment of the system is expected to enable transparent and accurate emission evaluation and management through the real-time monitoring of greenhouse gas emissions and ensure data permanence through the automatic accumulation of environment-improving big data.
