Hyundai Steel to Build Hangang Forest as an Urban Getaway

Hyundai Steel held its “Hangang Forest Building Event” on April 2.

Due to the ongoing pandemic, the event was done on a modest scale. The city of Seoul has granted Hyundai Steel approximately 330 ㎡ of land in the southern extremity of Jamsil Hangang Park. The company plans to install an array of trees and plants including hackberries, roses, bridal wreaths, and spindle trees, and a number of benches and guiding signs featuring the Hyundai Steel logo throughout the space in an endeavor to create a pleasant getaway for visitors to Hangang (Han River). What is worth noting is that this project will be funded by voluntary donations from the employees of Hyundai Steel.

Since 2005 Hyundai Steel has been creating funds for various good causes through a “matching grant” system, where employees’ contributions to a fund are matched in value by the company. Funds set up in this manner, over the last 17 years, have been used to provide relief to the underprivileged, a “home repair and maintenance project,” which improved the residential environments of those affected by energy poverty and low-income households, and a “fire extinguisher donation project,” where free fire extinguishers were supplied to the disabled and households susceptible to accidental fires.

There are other social contribution projects with the theme of environment and art, similar to the building of Hangang Forest, such as “H Atelier,” which opens up opportunities for creating artwork from steel. Hyundai Steel will continue to undertake social responsibility projects funded by donations from its employees in a bid to spread their goodwill throughout society.
