In July 2020, Hyundai Steel obtained green technology certification for its “cement-free ground solidification using steel byproducts for soft ground treatment,” a technology which was co-developed with Hyundai Engineering & Construction.
Through the green technology certification program, managed by the Korean government, green certification is granted to technologies that save and efficiently use energy and resources and contribute to the minimization of green house gases and the emission of pollutants. After many long discussions, Hyundai Steel and Hyundai Engineering & Construction selected the dust generated during the desulfurization of sodium bicarbonate as the target resource for its technology. This dust was selected as a targeted resource because it is one of the steel byproducts that can be most effectively used to develop eco-friendly cement. After selecting its primary resource, Hyundai Steel developed a plan to recycle the dust and other byproducts generated by steel plants. The new technology has enabled the company to protect the environment, create added value by recycling industrial byproducts, and secure price competitiveness by reducing costs.
