Activities by Community Service Contest Winners

Five winning teams were selected through an internal community service contest held last October to recognize Hyundai Steel associates for the volunteer activities they conducted in their neighborhoods and local communities.

The activities represent diverse ideas that are in line with the theme of the contest: “Contact-Free Social Contribution.” Let’s take a look at some of the activities that have helped our neighbors and local communities

Grand Prize

“Safety Keepers” for Single-Parent Families (Lee In-sup and 14 associates, Production Control Team, Dangjin Integrated Steelworks)

This team improved the living conditions of single-parent families in order to keep them safe and to enhance the children’s learning environment. The team installed CCTVs in homes to allow each parent to check on their children left home alone, using his or her mobile phone. In addition, the team replaced wallpaper, linoleum floors, desks, bookshelves, bedding, and other things so that the children could enjoy a better home environment.

Award of Excellence

Wintertime Support for Local Communities (Lee Mak-nae and 24 associates, Crane Maintenance Team, Dangjin Integrated Steelworks)

This team provided briquettes and heating oil to elderly citizens, and repaired or replaced their furnaces so that they could be warm and safe during the winter season. In addition, the team helped implement COVID-19 prevention measures at welfare facilities for vulnerable people groups, and assisted with farm work so that the elderly could spend the winter in comfort.

Honorary Mention

A Million Volts of Love for Low-Income Seniors (Kim Won-nyeon and 16 associates, Electric Power Team, Pohang Works)

This team replaced old electrical installations and provided fire-prevention supplies to low-income residents and elderly people living alone in the Pohang area. In particular, the team replaced old lights with LED lights so that the elderlyㅡmany of whom did not have working bathroom lightsㅡno longer had to rely on outside streetlights. Thanks to the team’s efforts, many people were finally able to comfortably use the bathroom at night.

Honorary Mention

Protect Our Seas! (Jin Hyun-woo and 14 associates, Coke Department, Dangjin Integrated Steelworks)

This team collected ocean waste and cleared up the areas around Yeonpo Beach in Taean. Sea divers collected waste and garbage found underwater, while at the same time eliminating invasive starfish that had been disturbing the marine ecosystem. After the underwater collection, the team cleaned up trash around the beach together with the Taean Voluntary Citizen Patrol.

“We were happy that we could help our neighbors,” said the volunteers who participated in the event. “It has been difficult to participate in volunteer activities due to COVID-19, and we are grateful that we had this great opportunity.”
