Hyundai Steel Selected as “2023 Sustainability Champion” by the World Steel Association

On April 18, Hyundai Steel was selected as a “2023 Sustainability Champion“” at the World Steel Association’s first regular meeting in 2023 held in Vienna, Austria. The World Steel Association has been evaluating the sustainability of its 140 member companies and recognizing outstanding steel companies every year since 2018. At the association’s most recent meeting, Hyundai Steel was selected as a “sustainability champion,” the highest level of sustainability, marking the first time the company received the coveted designation.

In order to be recognized as a World Steel Association “Sustainability Champion,” a company must maintain a high level of sustainable management and be selected as an outstanding sustainability member; be selected as a finalist in the safety and health category or the Steelie Awards; and submit Life Cycle Inventory (LCI) data on the carbon emissions associated with its materials and processes.

Hyundai Steel was recognized as an outstanding steelmaker in the safety and healthy category for its introduction of SPOT ― a four-legged walking robot that combines IoT and AI technologies to prevent accidents in high-risk areas in Dangjin Integrated Steelworks. At the Steelie Awards, the steelmaker scored high marks in the innovation category for successfully producing alloy steel for gear reducers and 1.5GPa (gigapascal) high-strength steel sheets used to create high-performance materials for EVs.

In the communication category, Hyundai Steel was recognized for its operation of an experience center, “Eco-Friendly Steelworks,” at the children’s job experience park, KidZania. This center was designed to raise awareness of the eco-friendliness of steel and the importance of resource circulation.
