Utilizing Big Weather Data to Improve Product Quality

Recently, Hyundai Steel jointly held a contest with the Korea Meteorological Administration to collect various ideas from Korean university students and other contest participants for the “development of a condensation prediction model for steel products in a factory setting.”

The company is considering selecting and improving some of the best ideas submitted by contest entrants, to apply various condensation prediction models within this year.

Hyundai Steel is also planning to develop an information screen that operators can easily use to understand current status information at a glance, as well as a corresponding smartphone app. A new forecasting system will also be implemented by the company to predict the temperature and humidity of coil products and indoor air at factories 24-48 hours in advance. The system will also be used to calculate forecasted dew points, based on the comprehensive analysis of temperature and humidity data collected by the factory and weather forecast data. The new application is expected to increase the reliability of condensation forecasting systems.

※ Condensation: The phenomenon of condensation occurs when the air temperature drops below the dew point, and water droplets form on the surface of steel materials. Condensation leads to rust or stains, causing problems with product quality. Therefore, improving the accuracy of the condensation forecasting system is a very important task for steel manufacturers.
